35 - TARUMÃ  Vitex polygama Cham. (VERBANACEAE)

35- Tarumã - Vitex polygama Cham. (VERBANACEAE)

Rough, peeling bark tree, 10 to 12 meters high. Strongly hairy shoots and branches, with a rust color. Composite leaves, with five pointed leaflets, 10 to 18 cm long and 5 to 9 cm wide. Light purple, funnel-shaped tubular flowers. Drupe type fruit, almost black when ripe, about 1.5 cm wide and covered with hairiness.

Distribution: Typical savanna, cerradão and seasonal semideciduous forest.

Situation in São Paulo: It is rare, but the city may eventually provide copies for those who want to plant.

How to plant: The seed sprouts between one to three months depending on the conditions, but it can be planted directly in the final place combined with other seeds. Pieces of root or branches can be treated with rooting and, hopefully, produce a new tree.

Uses: Fruits with a peculiar flavor, very appreciated by the fauna and for jellies, jams, liqueurs and juices. The leaves are considered as medicinal in folk medicine, as emenagogues and for the treatment of kidney problems.
