49- Sumaré - Cyrtopodium flavum Link & Otto ex Rchb.f. (ORCHIDACEAE)

Terrestrial plant or more rarely growing on rocks, with characteristic rounded, long and succulent pseudobulbs, from 6 to 8 leaves. Thin, long, pointed leaves, with parallel ribs, up to 40 cm, pointed and always green. Flowers in clusters, yellow and with yellowish-green sepals, lip divided into three lobes.

We always have an extra reverence for orchids. I found some specimens of the Sumaré type, on Rodovia Anhanguera, in a place taken by brachiaria grass that seemed to have nothing special. From a distance the yellow flower stood out, the area was under construction and I collected two copies before turning everything over and throwing dirt over it.

The neighborhood of Sumaré, which is between Cemitério do Araçá and Vila Pompéia, still had its hills covered with fields until the 40s. subdivisions. The name of the orchid, gave name to the company that in turn named the neighborhood of Sumaré. Interestingly the name was chosen by one of the partners, Mr. José Rebello da Cunha, on a visit to the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, having nothing to do with the orchids of the São Paulo neighborhood, which certainly should also be part of the landscape. Today that context has disappeared.

Situation in São Paulo: Rare.

​

How to plant: The transplant must be done with maximum preservation of the roots and bulbs. In older plants, it is possible to split clumps. It enjoys soils rich in organic matter and well drained, always covered with straw and dry leaves.

​

Uses: Ornamental plant, with intense flowering, with possible uses in landscaping. Its popular name “cola-de-shoateiro” is a reference to its gummy juice strongly sticky.
