43- Melãzinho-do-cerrado - Melancium Campestre (CURCUBITACEAE)

Prostrate or creeping plant, with branches covered with down. Leaves with petioles with many hairs, 2.0 to 6.6 x 0.8 to 3.2 cm leaf, gently denticulated, without tendrils. Flowers arranged in racemes, yellow, separated into male and female. Green fruit with light green, globose, hairless patches, from 0.7 to 2.2 x 0.6 to 2.5 cm; oblong seeds. It blooms and bears fruit from December to April.

 

Distribution: Throughout the national territory, in cerrado, cerradão, campo cerrado, rock formations, disturbed cerrado and riparian forest.

 

Situation in São Paulo: There is at Parque do Juqueri; in the city, if it still exists, it is very rare.

 

How to plant: Only by seeds, taken from ripe fruits.

 

Uses: Ornamental and edible plant, similar to small watermelons with yellow and acidic pulp fruits. It has great variation in the shapes and size of the leaves, depending on the environmental conditions in which it is grown.
