42- Jarrinha - Aristolochia galeata Mart. & Zucc. (ARISTOLOCHIACEAE)

 

Robust, climbing plant with underground tuberous stem. Purple leaves when young, heart-shaped, petiole 2.7 to 9 cm; leaf from 5.2 to 15.4 × 6.2 to 16.7 cm, kidney-shaped, entire margin, top face with hairiness, and bottom smooth. Showy, smelly, solitary or in group flowers, with the characteristic shape of a jar, purple to moss green, with spots. Capsule type fruit, which, when dry, opens in the form of an inverted parachute and releases the seeds, flat and light. It does not bloom only at the beginning of winter .

 

Distribution: It occurs in Goiás, Minas Gerais and from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo, in several formations, from high altitude forests, closed to rupestrian fields.

Situation in São Paulo: Occasional on fences, lampposts and even on trees. Presents invasive behavior and abundant growth.

​

How to plant: It multiplies by seeds, which have low viability, and by thickened pieces of stem without leaves, kept in fertile soil, well drained, with good humidity and covered with straw or dry leaves.

​

Uses: Landscape, due to the shape of its leaves and the peculiar flowering, used as decorative in fences and pergolas. Medicinal use of its leaves, called in popular medicine the vine-thousand-men.
