41- Macela-do-campo - Achyrocline satureioides (LAM.) DC.

(ASTERACEAE)

Perennial herbaceous plant, very branched, up to 1.2 m high, with cylindrical branches and woolly texture. The leaves are simple, alternate, 7 cm x 1 cm, in the shape of a lance or linear, with full margins, sharp tips and rough texture, with whitish hair on both sides. The flowers are organized in groups, with thin petals, in cream color, surrounded by bracts with an acute apex, with a strong characteristic odor. The miniature fruit is of the achene type, dispersed by the wind.

That idea of a countryside landscape almost boils down to the flowering of the macela, which creates rhythms of color and volume in the landscape. For some reason, their vision is welcoming, and their composition with other plants is essential.

Distribution: Native plant in the Midwest, Southeast and South of Brazil in rural formations.

Situation in São Paulo: Common in vacant lots, old fragments of savannah and borders of highways, as well as in tops of hills and borders of trails.

How to plant: The root is shallow and easily removed, trying to conserve the root ball. It is always preferable to take small seedlings, around 15 cm, and plant with a little more organic and moist soil. It reproduces very fast, being a good way to create volumes in the vegetation.

Uses: Macela is a plant of very distinct beauty, either because of its delicate flowering, or because of its whitish color, forming dense massifs recognizable at long distance. From its dried flowers, an aromatic infusion is produced with several medicinal properties, such as sedative, anti-inflammatory, digestive and analgesic. In the South, it is used together with chimarrão. It is also traditionally used to make small pillows that, they say, fight insomnia.
