40- Velame branco - Mandevilla velame (A.St.-Hil.) Pichon (APOCYNACEAE)

 

Sub-shrub plant, up to 50 cm tall, erect, with a woolly and white texture. Opposite sheets, with cardboard texture, from 4.5 to 6.5 × 2 to 3 cm, elliptical, pointed, with a smooth margin, densely white and with a wool texture. Inflorescence at the tip of the branches, having 2 to 6 flowers, with 10 to 13 cm each; of five fused petals, greenish-white corolla, very distinct, slightly wavy. It has latex. Flowering from September to May.

 

Distribution: Occurs from Goiás to Rio Grande do Sul, in open, dry cerrado, occasionally in the field or in gallery forests.

Situation in São Paulo: Apparently it exists only in the State Park of Juqueri.

How to plant: By seeds, which form inside horn-like fruits. Slow-growing plant, but of great beauty even when young.
