30 - CANDEIA

Gochnatia polymorpha (Less.) Cabrera (ASTERACEAE)

30- Candeia - Gochnatia polymorpha (Less.) Cabrera (ASTERACEAE)

Medium sized tree (up to 10 m), tortuous trunks and branches, very thick and rough bark, with deep fissures. The branches, when young, are whitish and covered with hairiness, with a rough texture. Simple, alternating, oval to lanceolate leaves, 12 cm long and 4 cm wide, with acute apex, marked by intense whitish hair on the underside of the leaf. Pale flowers, grouped in chapters at the tip of the branches, and small achene-type fruits.

One of the most characteristic trees of the cerrado and that still persists within the urban fabric, suggesting fragments of cerrado in old wastelands. When entering an area full of them, it is interesting to notice that no trunk is the same as the other, all are rough and twisted, giving an interesting movement effect.

Distribution: Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Ceará.

Situation in São Paulo: Occurrence in vacant lots, sometimes of considerable size, and often considered a spontaneous plant.

How to plant: Collect the seeds before falling and plant in a sunny place, with the possibility of germination of 30% to 50%, emerging around 2 months.

Uses: Recommended for urban landscaping, due to its deep roots and open canopy, but not on sidewalks due to its tortuous trunk. Its leaves are used in folk medicine in cough syrups, flu and digestive problems. Its branches are highly valued to be used in fences, resistant to rot. But the big deal is its wood, a source of essential oil extremely valued by the cosmetic industry for its anti-inflammatory action, soothing and suitable for sensitive skin. Because of this, the management and domestication of the tree in development today is the only solution to avoid its predatory exploitation.
