24- Língua-de-tucano - Eryngium horridum Malme (APIACEAE)

 

Perennial herbaceous plant, 1 m high, from the center grows a long scape with inflorescences up to 2.5 m high. Appearance similar to that of a bromeliad, like numerous basal leaves, lanceolate, acuminate, up to 50 cm long and up to 2 cm wide. The margins are strongly spiny or jagged. Its flowering is in groups of small flowers up to 1.5 cm in greenish-white color, full of bracts. The fruit has an ovoid shape and spear-shaped scales.

 

Distribution: Common plant in the Midwest, Southeast and South, in open fields, countryside formations and sunny places with little disturbance. Very distinguished by its spiny aspect, as well as by its exuberant flowering, up to 1.5 m high, during the summer.

Situation in São Paulo: Common plant in vacant lots, roadsides and open hills, always in full sun. Resistant to burning.
