19- Vassourinha - Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (ASTERACEAE)

 

Sub-shrub plant, with a very branched stem, brown colored branches and full of simple leaves, 2 to 3 cm long, alternating and without petiole, giving the appearance of rosemary. Inflorescences in the leaf axils, formed by chapters, with petals transformed into white hair. Propagation by seeds that spread with the wind.

 

Distribution: Midwest, Southeast and South of Brazil in the Cerrado, in rural and capoeira formations.

Situation in São Paulo: Abundant as an invasive plant, mainly on roadsides and vacant lots.

​

How to plant: Finding just a broom is almost impossible, they always appear in quantity. Choose some 20 to 30 cm specimens and remove them with the root ball without damaging the root. Plant, expect to grow and bloom, they will reproduce and probably after that they will never stop being part of whatever you want to do.
