13 - Guabiroba - Campomanesia pubescens (Mart. Ex DC.) Berg (MYRTACEAE)

 

Shrubs or sub-shrubs up to 1.5 m high, densely covered with down. Elliptical or spear-shaped leaves, up to 6 cm long by 2.5 cm wide, with leather texture and marked by 5 to 10 pairs of ribs on each side. White flowers, with five petals and more than 100 stamens. Oval to rounded fruits, yellow when ripe, full of seeds and with a characteristic flavor.

 

This is an old-time plant. The grandfather of a friend of mine spoke of this plant, but it may be a residual invention of my memory.

Distribution: From Paraná to Mato Grosso, Goiás and Bahia.

​

Situation in São Paulo: It has become rare in the city; it is not even cultivated as fruitful.

​

How to plant:

 

Uses: Fruit highly appreciated in natura or processed, in liqueur, jam, jam, ice cream and tanned in cachaça. The leaves and bark of the stem are used in folk medicine to combat diseases of the urinary tract and in diarrhea. Its flowering is intense and very ornamental.
